Political Activism

I realize that it may be strange for someone who claims no affiliation with any political party to be so active in politics, but there comes a time when one can no longer be a disinterested observer.  I am fairly young, and am quite willing to admit that I have failed to vote more often than not in the past.  That is over, however.  I can no longer sit idly by and watch as my country turns away from everything that once defined it as a nation.  With the Bush presidency, I have seen basic civil rights gradually being taken away.  Now, conservatives are even trying to weave discrimination into the constitution.  They are forgetting that the flag we fly stands for 'liberty and justice for all' and not just for a few.

GLBT Rights:
For me, a bisexual woman, the current drive to ban same-sex marriage is more than a little frightening.  The very idea that it is supposedly meant to 'protect' marriage is ludicrous.  Banning same-sex marriage will not lower the divorce rate.  It will not ensure that all children have two parents in the household.  In fact, it will instead ensure that the children of gay parents will never have that.  If you feel the same way, please check out the links below for ways to help.
  • The Advocate: The national gay & lesbian newsmagazine.
  • Lambda:  (to quote from their site) a non-profit, gay / lesbian / bisexual / transgender agency dedicated to reducing homophobia, inequality, hate crimes, and discrimination by encouraging self-acceptance, cooperation, and non-violence.

Women's Rights:
Right now, a good bit of my involvement with feminist issues is also caught up in the fight for GLBT rights, but there are still plenty of issues that women have to face. There is not yet professional equality, despite appearances.  Women must still deal with an unfair double-standard.  Yet, I see more and more women grimacing at the sound of the word 'feminism.'  It's become something that represents militant man-haters who burn bras and refuse to shave their armpits.  There is a new feminism, however, and the women who fight for it are strong, sophisticated professionals who are coming closer and closer to breaking the glass ceiling.

Freedom of Religion:
As a Pagan, naturally this is one of the more important issues for me.  Over the last few years, I have noticed the American government becoming more and more Christian centered.  I have no problem with Christianity, but the separation of church and state is necessary. Without it, citizens could lose the right to practice whatever religion they wish. There is a reason that the First Amendment came first.  Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Speech were the two most important issues for those who wrote the Bill of Rights.  In the current political environment, those rights could be pulled from under us.
